We are within sight of the end guys! We are now on Day 11 of 12 Days of Anime, and Day 2 of the Top 5 lists to round out the year! Today we are going to look at my top 5 characters from the past year. This list was actually really hard for me to do because there were a lot of characters that I really liked this year, and one show in particular had an ENTIRE cast of characters that I really liked (for fun you can guess what show it was, and then see if you were correct when I mention it later on). Like I said, this took a lot of hard thinking on my part because there were quite a few characters that I really liked, and cutting it down to five made it even harder. These characters are in no specific order, but do beat out all the other characters from this past year. They also may not necessarily be the main character of their show, the only requirement being that I had to really like them.
1. Izuku “Deku” Midoriya – My Hero Academia
After season one, I really did not think that it was possible for me to come to love Deku even more. I was proven wrong. Firstly, watching Deku compete in the tournament arc had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. When he used the piece of the one robot to set off the landmines and propel himself forward, I was screaming at my screen because I was so proud of him. He is still the precious little cinnamon roll that I came to love in season one, but he has grown even more as a hero and is getting better and better at managing his quirk everyday. I am so proud of how far he has come, and cannot wait to see where he goes in season three. Watching him help Todoroki, then fight the Hero Killer, and work with Bakugo to fight All Might…I was crying the whole time. It is almost like watching my own child grow up.
2. Moriko Morioka – Recovery of an MMO Junkie
Alright, if you guessed Recovery of an MMO Junkie as the show that had an ENTIRE cast that I really liked, you were correct. Congratulations! Go eat an extra Christmas cookie (if you are celebrating, or just reward yourself with a sweet on me). I really do love Moriko as a character, as I have mentioned before, and watching her struggle with where she is at this point in her life is something that I really relate to. She is also a lovable dork and her interactions with Sakurai and the rest of the gang was just too precious. I also thought that they way they showed her insecurities with things like going to the store or talking to people was relatable. I absolutely love Moriko’s character and I know I am going to miss seeing her every week. She was my favorite female character from this past year.
3. Chise Hatori – The Ancient Magus’ Bride
First of all, as a fellow redhead Chise automatically gets bonus points. That is how being a redhead works. we have to stick together. Secondly, I think that the show does a good job of showing us why Chise is the way that she is. Knowing her background and what has all happened to her, you understand why she is distant and wary of people getting closer to her. I love watching her gradually open up from week to week, as she gets close to the people around her and grows as a mage as well. She is another one of those characters who almost could not catch a break, but now she has had many doors opened for her to be able to do what she wants. I love her and cannot wait see how much more she grows from here on out.
4. Kiyoharu Hyodo – Welcome to the Ballroom
I was going to but Tatara here, but Kiyoharu was the one that made me the most excited when he was dancing on screen. While Tatara is learning to dance, Kiyoharu is learning to cope his the injury he has sustained to his knee as well as dealing with his partner being stolen from him while he recuperates. He may be reluctant to do so, but he also helps coach Tatara to be a better dancer, or motivate him when he needs a little bit of a push. There is also something about him that makes you feel like he knows about more things than he lets on, and may not be as indifferent as he lets on. Sometimes Kiyoharu also acts as the person that explains to the audience what is going on, or what exactly the dancers are doing. Which I find really helpful because it would not have been explained properly otherwise. I also really wanted to put Sengoku in this spot but I ended up choosing Kiyoharu instead.
5. Yoichi Fujitani – Dive!!
Yoichi was a character that I kind of wish would have just been the main character for the entire show. He goes through a lot of character development over the course of the show, and has to regain his love for his sport. Bonus points because the reason he stopped for a while was not because of dumb girlfriend drama. Seeing him struggle with being used as a way for companies to make money, and having to search within himself for a reason to continue was an interesting concept to me. I talked about it a lot in my Dive!! and the Olympics post, and it is one of the best parts of the show for me. I put him on this list because I believe that he deserves a lot more screen time devoted to him, and because he kept an interesting plot going when it seemed like it was going nowhere. I really liked Yoichi and wish we could see more of him later.
Honorable Mentions: The entire cast of Recovery of an MMO Junkie and Class 1-A of My Hero Academia
I had to give both these groups of beautiful people a shout out because both groups added to the enjoyment factor of the show. Whether is was watching the 1-A kids fight each other and participate in the tournament, or the members of @Home Part help Koiwai learn to play an MMO, I loved every minute of it. There are not many shows that have an entire ensemble cast that you grow to love individually and together, and it really helped make the show even better. I just had to mention them because I love all of them. Special mention goes out to Koiwai for kicking Sakurai and Moriko into gear, and being the best wing-man of the year.
That is where I am going to go ahead an end today, and Day 11 of 12 Days of Anime. These are a few characters that I really liked from this past year. It was really difficult to pick my favorites, especially for the shows that had entire casts that I really loved. Let me know what you think though! Who was your favorite characters from this past year? Least favorite? Let me know down below!
