Fall 2017 Wrap-Up

With Fall 2017 season concluded and all wrapped in a bow, it is that time of the season to go over just how I think the shows I watched this season performed. There were…quite a few drops, some additions, some put on hold, and one show I finally caught up on! This season has actually been a real rollercoaster for me as a fan, seeing as how I look at the shows I started on and the ones I actually finished and there were quite a few changes made. We have a lot to go through, so buckle up guys.

Fall 2017 Wrap-Up

Original Line-Up

Ballroom e Youkoso (Production I.G.): COMPLETED

  • When Summer ended I mentioned I was absolutely thrilled that this show did not end with the Summer season. My opinion of the show did change after the second half, however. Which you can read all about in The Second Half: Welcome to the Ballroom post that I did for 12 Days of Anime. The second half had parts that hurt my enjoyment of the show. I did indeed finish it, and did somewhat enjoy it, there were still parts that I did not like. I do wish that they continue with the story to see how Tatara grows as a dancer competing against his friends. I did like the show, but it went from being my absolutely favorite to just one that I kind of liked.

Black Clover (Studio Pierrot): ON HOLD

  • Okay, guys…I am sorry. Asta’s Japanese voice actor drives me crazy. I know, I know, he probably works really hard and this is how they pictured the character…but I cannot handle it. I plan on catching up on the English dub because what I have heard of that Asta’s voice is…more tolerable. I will have go get back to you on this one guys.

Juuni Taisen (Graphinica): COMPLETED

  • I have heard a lot of people say it and I have to agree, this show was kind of disappointing. The idea was good! The characters were originally interesting! But then the show fell into a grove where you knew someone was going to die because they had an episode focused on their backstory. Also, two characters did not receive a real backstory like the other characters did. The guy who was built up to be the most likely winner died because he made a mistake and underestimated how crazy his enemy was. This show could have been so much better, but it was not. Even the fight scenes usually did not last very long, and most of it was spent on the character of the weeks backstory. I was really disappointed in this one.

Code:Realize: Sousei no Himegimi (M.S.C.): COMPLETED

  • This show was a pleasant surprise for me. It was not a show stopper, but it had an actual plot that made sense. The steampunk version of London was cool to see, and the fact that the story was not focused on the main boys fighting over the heroine was a bonus. I really liked they focused on one route of the game (love interest wise) so Cardia did not spend time trying to figure out what boy she liked best. I hope more anime based on otome games go this route, since we did get an ending. This show was my guilty pleasure this season.

RoboMasters the Animated Series (DandeLion Animation Studio): DROPPED

  • I watched two episodes and ended up losing interest. It turns out that the story about a college robotics club, in this show, was not as interesting as I had hoped. I had to drop it because I was not enjoying it at all.

Dynamic Chord (Studio Pierrot): DROPPED

  • This show could have been great! I could have sat on the edge of my seat watching these guys perform. But that did not happen. Plot points were not explained well, things were just kind of happening with no backstory, and when the boys did actually perform it was just cuts of them frozen in the same motion over and over again. I think in one episode the same band performed two or three times and it was just the same still shots of the boys in the same positions. After three episodes I could not stand it anymore and had to drop it.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Wit Studio): NOT DONE YET

  • I had no idea this was going to be 24 episodes and I could not be happier. Chise has easily become one of my favorite anime characters from this past year. Like I said this show is not done yet, so I will wrap it up when it does conclude after the Winter 2018 season. If it keeps going the way it has been going, it may become one of my favorites.

Additions

Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Signal. MD): COMPLETED

  • I guess you could say this was probably my favorite show of the season. It was an anime not set in high school (a plus), and had tons of relatable and likeable characters. From the precious Moriko to the best wing man ever Koiwai, I loved each and every one of these characters. It was only 10 episodes (plus the OVA), but I loved every single second of it. MMO Junkie also became a show that I watched both subbed and dubbed as it aired, so technically I watched this show twice this season. That is something that I hardly ever do. I, personally, really really like this show and also wrote about it for 12 Days of Anime, which you can check out here.

The IDOLM@STER SideM: (A-1 Pictures): COMPLETED

  • I also wrote about this show for 12 Days of Anime, which you can read here. This show made me fall in love with idol shows. It introduced me to a variety of characters from all kinds of backgrounds. There is not a single character in this show that annoys me, or bothers me when they come on screen. Watching each group grow closer and work to become the best idols they can be was awesome to watch. I am really going to miss this show. As of writing this, there is one more episode that needs to air but at this point there is absolutely nothing that could happen that would make me change my mind about this show. If there was one thing I could change, it would be the fact that the Producer did not have an actual name. I get its based on a game where you play the producer but…they could have put something in there.

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond (Bones): NOT DONE YET

  • I started watching the first season when it aired in 2015, watched two episodes, and then never got back to it. Two years later I finally caught up and am watching the second season as the dub is released. I just put it on here because it is from this season and I am watching it. I will let you guys now what I think of it once I actually finish it though.

And that is all that I have for this time! Overall, I really liked this season and some really good shows came out of it. I know there are some others that I missed but I hope to catch up on them later. Let me know what you guys thought though! What shows did you watch? What did you think of the shows you watched? Any I should try? Let me know down below!

See you next time!!

Oh thank you so much! I’ll get to it as soon as I can!

I seem to be in the minority in that I enjoyed most of Juuni Taisen (the exceptions being Snake and Dragon, which seems to be an opinion the majority of viewers shared). I would like some more on Rabbit or Ox, or maybe even Nezumi…but otherwise, it was fine and not “disappointment of the year” like I’ve seen people decry it as. I wonder what people would do if the sequel novel Juuni Taisen vs Juuni Taisen was adapted?

I binged a lot of Code:Realise since Netjuu no Susume gave me the space to do so, but I share pretty much all the sentiments you’ve given here. I also would call Netjuu no Susume my favourite of the season, but that OVA…I can’t watch it because I don’t have a subscription and don’t want to be bugged by the trial.

I have heard about the sequel novel and I think people may like it, it seems interesting to me. I do not think it was a bad show, I think that maybe I just expected something different which is why I was disappointed with what happened. There were parts that I liked though.
Hopefully the OVA will become available without the trial or subscription soon. There’s no huge changes in the story, but it is a fun episode to watch. I promise you are not missing out on too much though.

Nope, I waited longer than one week after it was released, I’ve checked the simulcast schedule and…it just doesn’t come up for free viewers. It’s exactly the same thing HiDive does, which pisses me off immensely.

That would make me angry too! That’s ridiculous!

I had similar thoughts about Ballroom, which I just wrote about in a review! The second half really did soil a lot of the excitement, but I like the new characters. Give and take, I suppose. All in all, I think it was a fairly enjoyable season of anime for everyone.
