Alright my dears! Here is the second half of the collab that I did with the wonderful Lita from Lita Kino Anime Corner! I seriously cannot tell you how excited I am for this collab to finally be out there and for you all to see it. It was wonderful working with Lita on this and talking about gundam was so much fun I wish we could have done it forever. But I will stop dragging on because you probably read part one already and am waiting for me to just get to the point. If you have not read part one yet you can read it here: Female Appeal of Gundam Collaboration. Okay, now I think that I’m ready to get started.
What was your first gundam experience?
Ka-chan: It seems so long ago now but it was probably ten years ago when I watched Gundam 00 for the first time. I had just finished Code Geass and the first episode popped up as a suggested video on YouTube so I decided to watch it. I remember when I first started it I was really overwhelmed by the sheer amount of characters and large amount of information overload. But I quickly fell in love with the characters and the story, and I ended up finishing both seasons of the show in a week. I was obsessed. I remember when I finished the first season and saw there was a second I was absolutely blown away from how the character interacted with one another and the politics of the whole thing. I seriously did not stop talking about it with my best friend for weeks.
Lita: First experience ah it was such bliss. As mentioning beforehand Gundam Wing was my first. But in this case the true taste I got of Gundam was Gundam Seed Destiny. I fell in love with the series so much, first time viewing. Immediately watched it twice right after. I had missed the excitemEnt of Gundam for such a long time. Older me was able to comprehend more at the time. When it came too plot and Characters.
Utter fascination my first time round truly. How twisted the plot could get and characters up and down emotions. It shocked me at one point how savage some of the characters intentions were. Maybe this when I realised I liked some twisted turns when it comes to anime. Destiny was my window into what Gundam had to offer.
Do you find the romance element in Gundam, was added to sucker us females in?
Ka-chan: I definitely think that they started to incorporate it to do that, but I have to think it honestly may not have been the best idea. Depending on the show and the characters involved it can really help the show and make it interesting, but there are some other shows where I think that it probably would have been better if they had just left it out. I appreciate that they were doing something to bring in female by adding romance, but they do not always handle it the best.
Lita: So far in the gundam I’ve seen Seed was the only one that satisfied me in the romance department. Romance element is a hit or miss, if I had a gundam series. That would satisfy female fans, would have been mentioned already. From watching Destiny and Seed does feel like it was thrown in there. The drama that occurs in both series gets a bit ridiculous. But it gives the great reaction us females typically do “What the hell”. Despite all this Seed handled the romance better out of Destiny.
From watching Gundam 00 definitely confirmed for me romance was just thrown in there. There are obvious hints that indicate hidden feeling, teasers if you will. Of longing affections some characters have. But some are never explored leaving me a tad disappointed. I feel with future Gundam series I’ll watch it’s going to be hit or miss with romance. It’s not an element don’t feel should be left out but if its. Incorporated well among the crazy plots and drama.
Ka-chan: I do have to add to that because Gundam 00 was definitely one of those shows that did not do the romance concept as well as he could have. I feel like some couples the show did okay, but some others seemed kind of forced. I remember on Twitter Lita mentioned how much of an awful character Marina was in Gundam 00 and I couldn’t agree more. I feel like her relationship with Setsuna was super forced and I personally did not like it. There were some other pairings that I did like, but that was not one of them. It kind of brought the show down for me because the two of them together bugged the ever loving crap out of me.
From your first Gundam experience what expectations do you have/built up for future series you watch?
Ka-chan: I know that Gundam 00 really made me kind of an animation snob when it came to mech shows in particular. To me it is just such a pretty show that I had the thought of well if Sunrise can do this for a mech show with so much going on other studios can do better with what they do. I am not as bad now, in fact I feel a little guilty about feeling that way in the first place. Now it is just towards Sunrise in particular because I could see what they did in this show. I also look for shows with really big casts because I think that they pulled it off very well, but not all shows handle big casts well in the way that Gundam 00 did. It also had a really good story and explained the universe so well that when shows leave stuff out I get really aggravated because I do not know what is going on.
Lita: Gundam nails it every time in the characters, plot and world building areas. World set up is Gundam’s strongest point. With such intricate, fascinating settings. My only expectation or wish for the future series I watch. The romance element incorporated in not a forced light. I agree with Ka-chan Gundam 00 romance concept was very weak. Setsuna and Princess Marina relationship had no built foundation. Marina was a useless character who brought nothing to the series. I wanted to see Marina and Setsuna together honestly, alas didn’t work between the two. A romance concept that is strong with both likeable protagonists is what I’m looking for it. There is a Gundam series out there, that can give me that. I shall find out.
Who is your favorite Gundam pilot and favorite Gundam?
Ka-chan: Oh that’s such a hard one! My favorite pilot would probably have to be Setsuna from Gundam 00. I promise that I have seen more than just Gundam 00 guys, it has just remained one of my favorites. Setsuna though is really my favorite pilot though. He is so devoted to both Celestial Being and the Gundams, and he is a really kick butt pilot. I do have to say that Athrun from Gundam Seed was a close second. My favorite machine though is the Unicorn Gundam. First of all…it’s called the Unicorn Gundam and what is more magical than a unicorn? Not much. Plus it looks kind of plain to start out with but it’s destroy mode makes it look really cool. I do love Exia too though, but if I had to pick one machine to pilot myself it would be the Unicorn Gundam hands down!
Lita: Ahhh Ka-chan is not making this easy to answer, bringing up about Setsuna..seriously girl. Trying to kill me over here. There will be a new pilot and machine favourite, the more Gundam I watch. Pilot… Dam this is hard. Setsuna’s dedication to Celestial being and the boy knows to how pilot. But right now Kira has been my favourite pilot, he is a sweetie and his righteous attitude. Rubbed off on me rather quickly. Favourite machine.. Used to be ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Kira was winning for both categories but no Gundam 00 Twin Drive wins right now. Ah that machine blew me away towards the end of Gundam 00, with it’s true abilities. Just wait to ask me next time round, I may have different answers ahaha.
And that is all that we have guys!! Please make sure you check out the rest of Lita’s Mecha March posts because she did an entire month dedicated to such a wonderful genre that does not get enough attention, so if you happened to miss some please go back and read them! I highly recommend it. You can go see her blog here, her twitter here, and her YouTube channel here. She is one of the best people I have meet through my blog and I adore her to pieces.
Now that is really all I have? Please let me know what you guys think about this topic in the comments. Who is your favorite pilot? Favorite gundam? How do you think gundam is doing when it comes to drawing in a female audience? Just let me know what you think!
See you next time!!
